Can I Use Laundry Detergent in My Carpet Cleaner?

While it might seem like an unusual idea, the answer is affirmative. You can use laundry detergent stains in carpet cleaning solutions. However, it's essential to use the detergent correctly, as regular laundry soap might produce too much foam, leave residues, or even damage the carpet.

Using laundry detergent as an alternative to carpet cleaner can indeed save quite a bit of money. Even though laundry soap can replace carpet cleaner, it's best to opt for laundry detergents labeled with "HE."

HE-labeled laundry detergent stains signify they are low-sudsing and can disperse quickly, even in small amounts of water. HE stands for High Efficiency, specifically formulated for modern washing machines, which use significantly less water than older models. This means it produces fewer bubbles, making it suitable for carpet cleaning as it's also less likely to leave any residue behind.

When using laundry detergent to clean carpets, also keep in mind:

Using more detergent doesn't necessarily mean cleaner results. Use the appropriate amount of water based on the machine's tank size.

Laundry soap is different from carpet cleaner. It can be used but tends to leave residues more easily. Overloading with detergent increases the chance of this happening, so less is more in this scenario.

Use a bleach-free laundry detergent stains to avoid unintentionally lightening your beautiful carpet.

Only use liquid laundry detergent; while the powder might work effectively, it could clog the machine's internals and is more likely to leave powdery residues on the carpet once dry.
